The Sunflower that went FLOP!

The children have been investigating sunflowers over the last few weeks.  We finished up with a little poem from the book of the same name.
Some lovely artwork.

Kitchen Garden

We went for a walk to the Kitchen Garden.  Its been a few weeks since we visited.  We could see how much the vegetables and flowers have grown!  We read signs in the garden that said broccoli and spinach.  We saw how tall the beans were growing.  Some children pulled out some radishes.  We picked mint and parsley and smelled them.  Benedict told us that her Mum makes tea with mint.   We met some of the migrant mothers in the garden, and they were picking herbs for cooking.

Independent Reading

I have noticed over the last few months that the children seldom choose books to read when they can choose to play.  I have started having an independent reading time, when children can choose from a variety of book boxes in the room, including the library corner.  By implementing this time more often in the room, the children have begun to be more engaged with books and independent reading, and are beginning to chose to read quietly at play times.

Focus on Maths

Maths is learnt in a fun way through games that are interactive and encourages children to work in pairs or small groups.  Today we played games focusing on number, shape and measurement.

Taakaro Time - Ice Play

Yesterday we had fun with ice!  There were all sorts of things frozen in the ice - shells, herbs, flowers, dinosaurs and teddies.  The children had fun exploring the properties of ice, and were developing language around this.
